Transforming Lives, One Life at a Time
A New Name, The Same Heart
For over 20 years, our community has known us as Kitty Cat Prevent-A-Litter Society — or simply KCP. While our organization has grown and evolved over the years, the heart behind our mission has never changed.
Today, we proudly move forward as North Island Humane Society KCP — a name that better reflects the expanding work we do for animals and the communities we serve across Vancouver Island and beyond.
Although our name is changing, our values remain exactly the same:
Same mission. Same compassion. Same commitment to animals in need.
KCP will always remain part of who we are. It represents the foundation this organization was built upon — prevention, rescue, education, and community support. This next chapter simply allows us to grow, help more animals, and continue making an even greater impact together.
Every year, we rescue and care for hundreds of vulnerable cats, kittens, puppies, and dogs. From neonatal kittens requiring around-the-clock bottle feeding to abandoned puppies needing urgent medical care, our team works tirelessly to give every animal a second chance at life.
As a nonprofit organization, we operate primarily through donations, grants, and community support. These funds directly help provide:
- Spay and neuter surgeries
- Vaccinations and medical treatments
- Emergency veterinary care
- Food, litter, and daily supplies
- Humane trapping and rescue efforts
- Shelter utilities and operational costs
- Foster and rehabilitation support
Behind every successful rescue is an extraordinary team of volunteers and coordinators who lead the many programs that keep our organization running.
Our programs include:
- Socialization Program – Helping fearful or shy cats learn to trust and become adoptable companions
- Cleaning & Care Program – Maintaining a clean, safe, and healthy environment for the animals in our care
- Foster Program – Providing temporary homes for animals needing recovery, growth, or socialization
- Intake Program – Managing incoming animals and ensuring proper assessments and support
- Barn Home Program – Finding safe and suitable outdoor homes for unsocialized cats
- Rescue Reading Buddies Program – Encouraging literacy and calm social interaction between children and animals
- Medical Program – Coordinating treatments, medications, and ongoing health care needs
- Adoption Program – Matching animals with loving forever homes
- Trapping Program – Humanely trapping feral cats for sterilization, medical care, and safe placement
- Landfill Program – Providing ongoing feeding, monitoring, and medical support to vulnerable feral cat colonies
- Last Litter Program – Helping families prevent future unwanted litters through compassionate support and spay initiatives
Our volunteers are the heart of everything we do. Their time, dedication, and compassion ensure that every little life entering our care is given the chance it deserves.
With more than 180 volunteers, foster homes throughout the community, dedicated coordinators, medical staff, and leadership, we are incredibly proud of what we accomplish together.
We are more than a shelter.
We are a community.
We are education, advocacy, prevention, rescue, and hope.
And with the continued support of our community, we can continue changing lives — one animal at a time.
How NIHS-KCP Is Funded
NIHS-KCP is supported through a combination of grants, fundraising efforts, and the generosity of our community. While some of our programs receive grant funding, the majority of our day-to-day operations, medical care, emergency response, and animal support services rely heavily on donations from compassionate supporters.
Every donation — big or small — directly helps provide food, shelter, medical care, spay/neuter services, transport, and second chances for animals in need across our communities.
We are incredibly grateful for the ongoing support that allows us to continue this life-saving work.
The True Cost of Rescue
Adoption fees are an important part of helping us continue our rescue work — however, they cover only approximately 50% of the actual cost we invest into each animal in our care.
Before adoption, animals often receive extensive support including veterinary exams, vaccinations, parasite treatment, spay/neuter surgery, microchipping, food, supplies, foster care, medications, and ongoing medical treatment when needed.
The remaining costs are made possible through donations, fundraising efforts, grants, and the incredible support of our community.
When you adopt from NIHS-KCP, you are not only giving an animal a second chance — you are also helping us continue to save more lives.
Barn Cat Re-homing
Sometimes, older kittens & cats that are caught do not tame and thrive best as outdoor cats. These cats need homes where they can live safely outdoors, providing natural rodent control in exchange for food, water, and shelter. Our volunteers assist rural property owners every step of the way in acclimatizing their new feline friends. While there is no set adoption fee for these healthy, spayed, and neutered cats, donations are greatly appreciated.
